India's capital Awakens to Toxic Haze After Diwali

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" category.

Alarming Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the city showed an pollution measurement over 500, which represents 10x the healthy level established by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that covers the capital as colder weather approaches.

Nevertheless recently, the recently formed city administration appealed to the highest court to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Legal Decision and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, the court approved the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Many recording stations throughout Delhi showed contamination reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Implications

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to worsening air quality in Lahore on contaminants originating in across the border following the events.

Chronic Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Near Diwali, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Sources

The problem in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air sets in.

Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous studies.

This pollution results in elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be responsible for ten thousand early mortalities per year in the city.
